Cool & Dre join Cash Money Records: Smart move or silly decision?

August 6, 2010 Pinkalicious!

Yesterday (05/08/2010) Cool & Dre revealed to that they have signed a deal with Baby’s Cash Money record label. Cool & Dre are a team of hip hop producers from Miami who own  their own record label, Epidemic Records. The talented duo have produced bangers for the likes of DJ Khaled (Brown Paper Bag), Ja Rule (New York ft Fat Joe and Jadakiss) and  The Game’s debut single Hate it or Love it ft 50 cent.

Andre “Dre” Lyon told “In 2011 it’s all about diversifying your talent and aggressively pursuing opportunities…It’s not about replacing legends and their accomplishments, it’s about creating a new legacy to inspire future young business men and women.”

Although the producers have worked with Cash Money in the past, their decision seems to have split their fans in half. Whilst some fans think this is a great move for both the producers and the industry powerhouse which is Cash Money records, others are think this could be the worst decision Cool & Dre could ever make. Cash Money have been without an in-house producer since 2005 when Mannie Fresh left due to a finincial debate . Mannie Fresh is believed to be the man behind the sound of Cash Money back in the ’90s when they dominated Hip Hop sales. Mannie Fresh spoke up and said that he did whole albums for the record label without getting paid and left the label when he realized exactly what was going on. “I did albums for Cash Money, I didn’t do singles, I did whole albums for Cash Money, and at the end of the day I’m saying I wasn’t paid for albums so its like you’re doing 10 songs and somebody pays you for 1.”  Mannie went as far as saying “That’s why Baby can go around flaunting this cash, because that’s everyone else’s money… It’s not even Wayne’s fault. Wayne is not getting money. He is given money, he’s not getting money. If Baby gets a million dollars he’ll buy Wayne a Phantom, but that’s in Cash Money’s name.”

So for these reasons, some fans are asking why would Cool & Dre who are established producers in their own right want to sign to Cash Money? Let’s just hope that the duo have a bullet proof contract because it seems that Cash Money have history when it comes to short changing their people and history sometimes has a way of repeating itself.
